Ten people are accused of lying about their incomes on applications for free or reduced price school meals in Bayonne.
Eight of those charged with fraud live in Bayonne and two live in Brick Township. Authorities allege they fraudulently reported their financial income between September 2009 and September 2011.
A household of four in Bayonne must make no more than $44,863 per year in order to qualify for the school meals program.
School Board business administrator Leo Smith tells The Jersey Journal 62 percent of the children in the district are enrolled in the free and reduced meal program. Smith says 5,000 households apply for the program each year.
