Ex-College Basketball Coach Indicted for Allegedly Sexually Assaulting Boys

A former county college basketball coach and recreational center director has been indicted on charges he sexually assaulted two boys and engaged in sexually explicit conversations with two others.

A 25-count indictment charges Christopher Tarver, of Jackson Township, with crimes including official misconduct, sexual assault, criminal sexual contact and child endangerment.

Middlesex County prosecutor Andrew Carey said Tarver coached at Middlesex County College from 2006 to 2014 and served as recreation director in Dunellen and North Plainfield.

Tarver, 43, is accused of assaults at the college and the Dunellen Recreation Center in 2010 and 2011. He also is charged with sexually assaulting a 15-year-old in 1995 at his home in Jackson.

Tarver also is accused of sending sexually explicit texts to a basketball player under 21 and providing the player with marijuana and alcohol.

Tarver has maintained his innocence since his arrest last year, said attorney Peter Weiner, who represents him. A message left at a phone listing for Tarver on Thursday wasn't returned.

According to Carey, the investigation began after an accuser who had played for the Monmouth Power Sports Club, an AAU-affiliated traveling team coached by Tarver, notified authorities.

The indictment was handed up Jan. 16.
