Balconies Collapse at Long Island Apartment Complex

Half a dozen balconies collapsed at a Long Beach apartment building Tuesday, and one resident tells NBC 4 New York she's been pleading with her landlord to make repairs to her balcony for more than a month.

"The bricks have always been a little loose," resident Patricia McNulty told NBC 4 New York.

McNulty started to take pictures of her deteriorating balcony in mid July to show her landlord the state of it.

"Every week I keep telling him, fit it; fix it; fix it. And two weeks ago he said, 'don't go on your balcony,'" she said.

Landlord Carmine Tepedino blames bad timing for the collapse.

"It wasn't abandoned. It wasn't done on purpose. I've been here 52 years, we have no violations," he told NBC 4 New York.

Tepedino says construction to repair the balconies started Monday.

Photos and video from the scene showed an extensive emergency presence at the complex on Shore Road between Long Beach and Monroe boulevards.

No injuries were reported.
