Baby, Mom Among 3 Shot on New Jersey Street: Police

The child and her mother were innocent bystanders, police say

A baby girl and her mother were wounded, along with another man, outside a New Jersey home Monday night when gunfire erupted as children played on the street, police say.

Police say the 1-year-old girl and her 29-year-old mother were on Comstock Street in Asbury Park when bullets started flying shortly after 7 p.m. Police say as many as 15 shots were fired.

The mother was shot in the ankle and the child was hit in the leg. Both were taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune and are expected to be OK.

The third victim, a 19-year-old man, went to the hospital on his own, according to police. It's not clear if he was targeted in the shooting, nor was it immediately clear where he was shot.

Resident Kathy Acevedo says she was indoors when the "pop, pop, pop" of gunfire made her dive to the floor.

Capt. Anthony Salerno tells the Asbury Park Press someone knows who committed the shooting and needs to step forward to stop the violence.
