9-Month-Old New Jersey Baby Ingests Painkillers, Mom and Boyfriend Arrested

A New Jersey woman and her boyfriend were arrested after her 9-month-old son ingested painkillers and was unresponsive when he was taken to the hospital.

Paramedics were called to the child's home in Wyckoff on Saturday, where police found the child unconscious with a bruise on his head.

The baby was later transferred to Columbia Presbyterian in New York City due to brain swelling.

The Bergen County prosecutor's office said the mother and her boyfriend did not tell police what may have caused the baby to become unresponsive. At the home, police found a painkiller known as Suboxone, as well as other drug paraphernalia, prosecutors said.

Later, detectives were advised by hospital staff that the baby responded well when given a drug to counteract the effect of opiates. Detectives also found deleted text messages on the couple's phones that prosecutors say indicate they knew the baby had ingested drugs and that they intended to deny any knowledge of that.

Both are charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
