Authorities: 2 Newark Shooting Victims “Targeted”

Authorities in northern New Jersey say two men slain in separate shootings in Newark early Sunday were apparently targeted by their assailants. But it's still not clear whether the incidents are related.

Anthony Ambrose, chief of detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's office, said 19-year-old Anthony Davis was shot around 1:40 a.m. on Fabyan Place. He was taken to University Hospital, where he died about two hours later.

Police then responded to a shots fired call on Eastern Parkway around 2:30 a.m. and found 24-year-old Frederick Smith of Newark had been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ambrose said the county's homicide task force is investigating both shootings. But he declined further comments, citing the ongoing investigation.
