Artists Reclaim the City's Illegal Billboards…Again

For the second time this year, groups of uniformed volunteers took to the streets on Sunday with a mission to wipe out a number of NPA City Outdoor street advertisements and replace their contents with art.

Coordinated by the Public Ad Campaign, the volunteers operated on the pretext that the ads are illegally operated, and therefore should be treated as public space ripe for original art. However, NPA obviously doesn't agree.

Animal reports "the NPA became hip to the widespread attack pretty quickly and responded with violence-threatening workers and lots of wheat-paste, in some cases reclaiming the space as quickly as it had been buffed and decorated."

The NYPD allegedly got involved as well and arrested three individuals.
