Arrest Made in Mugging of Former Newark Mayor

Police have made an arrest in the mugging of former Newark mayor Sharpe James.

Newark police say 20-year-old Alhafeez Williams approached James from behind Thursday, put him in a choke hold and grabbed a gold chain from around his neck before fleeing Thursday.

James was not injured in the attack.

Williams was arrested early Friday morning and charged with the robbery. His bail was set at $50,000.

James was mayor from the mid-1980s until 2006. He was later convicted in a federal corruption trial and sentenced to more than two years in prison.
