Apologetic Intruder Charged with Burglary: Police

Breaking a window to enter a Long Island residence, the intruder had just one thing to say when confronted by the woman living there: "I'm sorry."

A 24-year-old Hicksville resident told police that she heard glass breaking in her bedroom at about 11 p.m. Saturday and when she entered the room she heard a man utter an apology. The intruder then climbed out the broken window and fled.

Nassau County police officers followed a blood trail to a parking lot on Old Country Road and spotted 34-year-old Shane Lopez bleeding from wounds to his head, arms and hands, investigators said Sunday. Lopez, dressed entirely in black, had taken nothing from the house.

Officers charged Lopez, a Hicksville resident, with second-degree burglary. It was unclear whether he had obtained a lawyer who could comment on the arrest.
