2 Men Sentenced in Death of Brooklyn Toddler Shot in Stroller

The men convicted in the shooting death of a New York City toddler who was killed in his stroller have been sentenced to the maximum prison time they were facing.

A judge has sentenced 25-year-old Daquan Breland to 25 years to life in prison and 21-year-old Daquan Wright to 15 years plus probation in the death of 16-month-old Antiq Hennis in September 2013.

Antiq's father Anthony Hennis was pushing him in a stroller in Brownsville when the gunman, Breland, started shooting. Prosecutors said Anthony was the intended target, and that Wright handed Breland the gun that night.

During the sentencing, Antiq's aunt Cherina Miller read a statement from the boy's mother, who was too distraught to appear in court.

"I have no closure and I'm not satisfied with anything when it comes to these two criminals," the statement read. "I don't care if they die of natural causes. My honey brown baby boy is not here to bring me joy."

As for the sentence, Miller read from the statement: "While everyone calls this justice, I know for a fact these guys don't care about the time because when it's over, they'll be back on Bristol Street committing more crimes."

Wright was stoic in court except to say: "I'll be back on appeal."

Assistant District Attorney Howard Jackson said he frequently speaks with Antiq's mother and that she remains inconsolable over the loss of her son.

"The one thing she's pointed out repeatedly is that irrespective of what the outcome of the trial or the decision of the court as sentencing is concerned, nothing will ever bring back her child and that's the thing she has to live with for the rest of her life," he said.

The attorneys for both Breland and Wright said they plan to appeal the judge's sentencing decision.
