Assault on Man, 27, Probed as Hate Crime

Police are investigating an assault on a 27-year-old man as a hate crime.

Authorities responding to the Monday night call on East 63rd Street on the Upper East Side found the man with a cut ear. He told police he was walking with his wife around 8 p.m. when a car pulled up and the driver, along with passengers in the vehicle, started yelling anti-Semitic epithets.

Someone threw a water bottle at the man's wife, he told police.

The man told police he yelled back and then someone got out of the car and punched him in the head, leaving a small laceration on his ear, according to authorities.

The wife wasn't hurt.
