Nationally Renowned Chef, Author on Long Island Killed by Pickup Truck in Crosswalk

A nationally renowned chef and author on Long Island's East End was struck and killed earlier this week by a driver who allegedly circumvented an ignition interlock device, designed to check alcohol on a person's breath, to get behind the wheel.

Anna Pump, 81, of Sag Harbor, was walking in the crosswalk on Montauk Highway Monday evening when she was hit by a 1997 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by 40-year-old Luis Ortega, police say.

Pump was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ortega was arrested and charged with circumventing an interlock device, unlicensed operation and failing to yield for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

It wasn't clear why he had the interlock device on his car and information on an attorney for him wasn't immediately available.

Pump opened Loaves & Fishes Food Store in Sagaponack 25 years ago. She opened the Bridgehampton Inn & Restaurant in 1994 and the Loves & Fishes Cookshop in Bridgehampton with her daughter in 2003.

Pump authored four best-selling cookbooks, including "The Loaves & Fishes Cookbook," "Country Weekend Entertaining" and "Summer on a Plate." She also mentored Ina Garten of Food Network fame.
