Amtrak Switch Problems Delay NJ Transit Trains in and out of New York Penn Station

It took five days, but the "Summer of Hell" finally had its first notable transit disruption Friday morning -- and it had nothing to do with Penn Station.

New Jersey Transit said trains into and out of New York Penn were subject to 20-minute delays due to an Amtrak switch problem near Secaucus (which is not actually part of the summer rehab work).

One eyewitness on an idling train said the train's conductor warned passengers the delay would last a while.

Elsewhere, service on an Amtrak Northeast Regional train was also temporarily suspended when it struck a person in Milltown, New Jersey, shortly before 10:30 a.m., an Amtrak spokeswoman said. None of the 427 passengers nor crew members on train no. 141 was hurt.

Monday marked the start of a two-month overhaul of Penn Station's infrastructure. Despite weeks of warnings, the disruptions have ended up being relatively minor and most commuters have had inconveniences kept to a minimum.
