Girl Abducted From Bronx Foster Center Found Safe in Queens: NYPD

The child's mother was arrested

A 4-year-old girl with Down syndrome has been found safe in Queens, hours after police say she was abducted by her mother during a visit at a Bronx foster center.

An Amber Alert was canceled after Mia Olarte was found safe in Queens with her mother, 48-year-old Dora Estrella Olarte, at about 11 a.m. Tuesday, police say. Both were being evaluated at Elmhurst Hospital.

Police activated the alert Tuesday morning after the mother allegedly took the girl during a supervised visit at The New York Foundling foster center on Brown Place in Mott Haven shortly before 5 p.m. Monday.

When the alert was issued, authorities said that Dora Estrella Olarte had a history of mental illness and had been accused of abuse.

The girl's foster mother told NBC 4 New York that Dora Estrella Olarte gets to visit her foster mother once a week. She said that she was at the foster center when Mia Olarte was taken.

Dora Estrella Olarte was arrested and charged with custodial interference and acting in a manner injuriors to a child younger than age 17, among other offenses.
