83-Year-Old Pilot Crashes in 86-Year-Old Plane: Police

An 83-year-old pilot and his passenger were injured Sunday when their 1929 aircraft crashed on the eastern end of Long Island, police said.

The pilot, George DeMar, told police his plane had engine trouble before it went down at a private airstrip on Shelter Island.

Police found the 1929 single-engine plane with its nose in the ground when they arrived.

DeMar and his passenger, Susan Klenawicus, 52, were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
