Police Seek Suspect in Death of 59-Year-Old NYPD School Crossing Guard, City's First Homicide of 2013

Police are looking for a 25-year-old suspect who shot and killed a 59-year-old woman in the Bronx. It's the first homicide in New York City this year.

The victim was identified as Elzina Brown. She was found at about 1 p.m. Thursday. Her 22-year-old daughter also was shot, but was expected to survive.

Police believe Brown was killed by her daughter's boyfriend during an argument. They identified the suspect as 25-year-old Raymond Mayrant.

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

New York City saw a record-low number of murders last year — 418. The previous low was 471, in 2009.
