5 Charged in Padlock Attack on HS Student

Teenage victim tells paper she couldn't open her jaw after the attack.

Five Brooklyn high school students have been charged with attacking another student with a padlock inside a sock.

The 17-year-old victim, Shacara McLaurin, told the Daily News that she wasn't able to open her jaw after the April 1 attack.

She told the paper that one of the girls wanted to hurt her because she sang better than her. They were competing in a talent show at the Brooklyn Academy and Bedford-Stuyvesant Preparatory School. The show, planned for Friday, was canceled.

The five students have been charged with assault, menacing, weapons possession and harassment. They were released without bail, the News says.

A Department of Education spokeswoman said the principal was unaware of the attack until hearing from McLaurin's mother. She said the DOE was looking into the incident.
