A Long Island man was fatally shot while driving in Hempstead before he crashed through a school yard fence, injuring three children.
Nassau County Police say 45-year-old Jonathan Wade was driving through Hempstead around 6 p.m. Tuesday when he witnessed a disturbance and called 911. When he circled around the block, someone fired several shots at him, striking Wade and his 2001 Lexus.
Detectives say Wade drove off before crashing through a fence and colliding with the bleachers at Hempstead Middle School. Three children, ages 4, 8 and 12, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Wade died at a local hospital.
Police did not provide any details about the nature of the disturbance that led to his shooting. No arrests have been made.
