2 Killed in Newark During City's 24-Hour Peace Event

Two men were fatally shot in separate incidents Saturday in Newark during the city's Fifth Annual #24HrsOfPeace.

The first shooting occurred at 7:40 a.m. on the 200 block of Springfield Avenue and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office identified the victim as 42-year-old Condell Walker, of Newark.

A second man was shot on the 300 block of 6th Avenue and taken to University Hospital where he died at 12:30 p.m., prosecutors said. The man's identity wasn't disclosed.

No suspects or motives have been determined in both cases, prosecutors said.

The #24HrsOfPeace event, which featured a hip-hop concert and such activities as a community breakfast and a movie night, was organized as an attempt to unite residents against crime and violence. The event is held on the site where five people were killed in an August 2014 gang war.

The Essex County Sheriff's Office Crimestoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gunmen in Saturday's shootings.
