2 Girls, Mother Saved After Being Caught by Rip Current on Long Island Beach: Police

Two girls and their mother were rescued after being caught in the rip current at a Long Island beach Sunday where a 48-year-old man drowned last month, police said.

The three were about 75 to 100 yards out in the water around 8 p.m. at Smith Point County Park when they started struggling to stay afloat, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Marine Bureau officers Chris DeFeo and Ray Harkins rushed to the scene when a bystander told them he heard people screaming in the water in front of the TWA Flight 800 Memorial, police said.

A male family member was able to reach 15-year-old Adreina Collado and carry her safely to shore. Officer DeFeo jumped into the water and rescued 11-year-old Jairiamy Collado.

As the girls were being carried out of the water, their mother, 42-year-old Nancy Collado, became unconscious while she was waist-deep in water. A male beachgoer rescued her and brought her to shore.

The three were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in East Patchogue where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

In June, 48-year-old Kerry Agosto, of Ronkonkoma, drowned at Smith Point County Park. Beachgoers found him floating near the shore and tried to perform CPR, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital.
