2 Charged With DWI in Long Island Crash: Police

Two drivers were charged with driving while intoxicated early Saturday after their cars collided in Long Island, authorities said.

A passenger in one vehicle was seriously injured, Suffolk County police said.

Police charged Miguel Almonte, 22, and Leslie Rizos, 49, both of West Babylon, with DWI after responding to the 3 a.m. crash at the intersection of Livingston and Park avenues in Babylon.

Xavier Gonzalez, 21, a passenger in Almonte's car was seriously injured and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, police said. Almonte and another passenger, Joseph Adams, 22, were treated for injuries at the same hospital and released. Rizos was also treated at the hospital and released.

Almonte's southbound car passed through a stop sign on Livingston Avenue and struck Rizos' westbound car on Park Avenue, investigators said. Almonte's car then struck a telephone pole.

It was unclear whether Almonte or Rizos had obtained a lawyer to comment on the charges.
