19 Injured, 1 Killed in NYC Weekend Shootings: Police

At least 20 people have been shot -- one fatally -- in New York City this weekend in 15 separate incidents, officials said Sunday.

The most recent shooting occurred at about 7 p.m. Sunday, when a man was fatally shot during a dispute with two others on Jamaica Avenue in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn, police said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was found unconscious and unresponsive on the street with a gunshot wound to the head and another to the torso, police said. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. No arrests have been made.

None of the weekend's other victims died, and police said that statistics weren't immediately available to compare the numbers to comparable periods last year.

The apparent uptick comes on a weekend in which temperatures in the city soared and many residents headed outdoors. Research has shown that crime rates tend to go down in cold weather and increase when it warms up.

This February, one of the coldest ever in the city, saw a 12-day stretch without any killings. It was the longest stretch of days without a homicide investigation since the city began tracking that data in 1994.
