14-Year-Old Boy Drowns at Queens Beach: Police

Two 14-year old boys had been swimming in the ocean in Far Rockaway when they began to struggle

A teenager who was swimming at a Queens beach drowned on Tuesday, officials said.

Police responded to a call of a person in the water early Tuesday afternoon. Two 14-year old boys had been swimming in the ocean near Seagirt Boulevard and Beach 19th Street in Far Rockaway, when they began to struggle, witnesses told The Daily News.

The boys were swimming in a part of the beach where there were no lifeguards, witnesses said.

A beachgoer was able to pull one of the teens out of the water, but the other boy remained in the ocean, police said.

A search and rescue operation commenced with NYPD and FDNY divers and the second boy was recovered approximately 40 minutes later, police said.

The teen was rushed to St. John's Episcopal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, officials said.

He has been identified as Akeem Craig of Queens.
