11-Car Accident Closes Section of Staten Island Expressway

One person was hurt in the accident, authorities say

A section of the Staten Island Expressway was closed Sunday morning after an 11-car pileup on the roadway, officials said.

The expressway was closed between Hyland and Fingerboard Road, officials said. It was reopened by the afternoon.

One person was injured in the crash about 9 a.m. and taken to Staten Island Hospital, according to the FDNY.  The extent of the person's injuries was unclear.

Freezing rain and sleet left roads across the tri-state dangerously icy, and several other accidents were being blamed on the weather. At Kennedy Airport, a plane skidded off the runway into a snow bank, briefly shutting down the airport.
