Queens Fire Kills Pregnant Woman, Young Son

In an early morning tragedy, a fast moving fire in the Springfield Gardens section of Queens killed a mother and her two-year-old son.

The woman was about six or seven months pregnant and around 24-years-old, the neighbors told NBCNewYork.  Her two-year-old son was named Aiden.

The fire broke out around 4 a.m. today and more than 60 firefighters responded, getting the blaze under control by 5:12 a.m., fire officials said.  It is believed the fire started on the couch.

Police say the smoke detector in the building was working but it was placed too low and never went off.

The young boy was rushed to Queens General hospital with severe smoke inhalation and burns but could not be revived.

The pregnant mother and her son were found in a back living room where the fire seemed to be concentrated.
