A popular Williamsburg park that's been the center of attention for the ever-expanding neighborhood will see its gates close over the winter as part of Gov. Paterson's sweeping budget cuts. Geoffrey Croft, of the watchdog group, New York City Park Advocates, told the Post, "closing a park is unheard of in modern times".
But modern times are tough, and given the park's newcomer status, it's infanticide comes as little surprise, especially given the extensive nature of the cuts. The park is popular with W'burg residents as a sunbathing spot in the summer, and has been recently eyed by JellyNYC as a potential replacement for the McCarren Park Pool concerts.
It has been criticized by residents over its year-long lifespan for having too many rules, as the Daily News reported back in 2007. For starters, it closes early, causing Williamsburg park goers to miss "the most beautiful time of the day" for artist Dylan Williams, who "frequently heads to the park to paint the Manhattan skyline." Dylan, alongside the sunbathers, concert goers, and the rest of the city, will have to find somewhere else to go for their evening sunsets over the city once the gates close in January.
But fear not, as the closing only extends through March, giving early season sunbathers a chance to brave the elements early in 2009.
