Newark Airport Romeo Pleads Guilty in Security Breach

A Rutgers University graduate student from China pleaded guilty today in a Newark Liberty International Airport security breach that led to worldwide flight delays.

Haisong Jiang agreed to pay a $500 fine and perform 100 hours of community service as part of his plea to defiant trespassing, a misdemeanor charge.

The 28-year-old doctoral student said through an interpreter that he is "deeply sorry."

Jiang was arrested Jan. 8, days after authorities said he entered a restricted area at the airport to say goodbye to his girlfriend.    

The security breach was caught on surveillance video, which helped authorities track down the suspect. The video showed a man in a tan jacket waiting at the exit-way where passengers from arriving planes leave the terminal.

The man seems to wait impatiently -- then, when the security guard minding the exit walks away --  for over half-a-minute -- the man meets up with an exiting woman and goes back into the terminal. They seem to be smiling and happy, with no ulterior motives. Perhaps they wanted just one last goodbye kiss.

But the security breach was certainly serious.

Authorities say the Jan. 3 breach caused the shutdown of a busy terminal and snarled flights worldwide. The breach exposed security concerns at one of the nation's busiest airports and sparked calls for reform by local legislators.
