New York City Public Schools Open Today

Department of Education Opens Schools Despite Snow

At just after 5:00am, the New York City Department of Education announced schools will be open, as scheduled for Wednesday, January 12th.

However, the D.O.E. has canceled all field trips. The city says the Chancellor will decide at 10am weather after-school programs and PSAL events will run as scheduled today.

Parochial schools across New York City announced they would be canceling today's classes yesterday afternoon. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a press briefing yesterday that the City would not make a determination about school closures until after 5am this morning.

The Department of Education notes that New York City public schools have only closed 6 times since 1978 for a total of 8 lost educational days.
