Not only does the Metropolitan Transportation Authority want to raise it's fares, but it hopes you'll kick in a few extra bucks on your own too.

The MTA is considering asking riders to make donations to help in its efforts at environmental sustainability.

The proposal is being floated even as the MTA seeks to raise prices on fares and tolls.

MTA Policy Director Ernest Tollerson said that the program would allow riders to add an extra charge to tickets as a tax-deductible contribution for environmental programs.

Tollerson said the extra charge could be added to tickets for commuter rail, subways, buses and bridge and tunnel crossings.

The idea was proposed in a $1 million report by an MTA commission looking into ways to reduce the agency's environmental footprint.
