The start of the work week is off to a muggy start as July turns into one of the hottest on record.
A strong thunderstorm that moved into the region late this morning brings little relief, as a heat advisory is in effect until 6 p.m.
A strong thunderstorm that suddenly moved in on a group of children learning to sail near Belmar, N.J. and capsized the boats and sent 30 children into New Jersey's Shark River Monday. The students, ranging in age from 8 to 16, were all wearing life jackets and no one was injured.
Belmar Mayor Ken Pringle says the wind knocked over 15 to 20 of the small sailboats used in a learn-to-sail program.
The National Weather Service forecasts steamy temps that will feel like 95 degrees, with a chance of rain in some areas both in the morning and again this evening.
The hot, humid weather will stretch through the week, forecasts predict.
Air quality advisories are also in effect, and city cooling centers will be open to help New Yorkers combat the heat. .
City officials caution residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, keep out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Cooling centers are open again today for people trying to get some relief.
