The Guggenheim Museum -- one of the most renowned buildings constructed this century -- is celebrating its 50th anniversary today and is marking the occasion by inviting the public in for free.

The Frank Lloyd Wright-designed museum is currently hosting a major exhibition of Kandinsky's art that will remain on view through January 13, 2010.

In addition to waiving the $18 admission today, the Upper East Side landmark will also offer tours and other family-fun activities, the museum said.

The Empire State Building will be lit red tonight in honor of the Guggenheim 50th.

Since it opened in 1959, the Guggenheim has been considered one of the 20th century's most important architectural gems and the building is home to a renowned collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern, and contemporary art.

Inside the building, the viewing gallery forms a helical spiral from the main level up to the top of the building. Paintings are displayed along the walls of the spiral and also in exhibition space found at annex levels along the way.
