Ex-NYPD Officer Shot Wife, Crashed into Ambulance: Police

Shooter was allegedly fleeing cops

A retired city cop broke into his estranged wife's home, shot her, and then crashed into a responding ambulance in his attempt to flee the scene, according to Suffolk police.

Forty-three-year-old Darryl Fowler of Amityville, allegedly broke into his wife's Middle Island home around 11 o'clock last night, shot her several times and sped away in his Yukon. Moments later, his car struck the ambulance that was called to the scene.

The car sideswiped the emergency vehicle then crashed into a tree, bringing his escape to a halt.

Fowler, who had an injury to his eye, was identified as the victim's husband and taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center -- the same hospital his wife was airlifted to.Both were listed in stable condition.

Two domestic violence disputes have been reported at the woman's address before last night's attack, officials said.

Suffolk County police have filed five charges against Fowler, including attempted murder and burglary.
