Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan has formally announced his bid to be the next state Attorney General -- and the Republican has the backing of Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Donovan announced his decision to run Sunday morning, and Mayor Bloomberg was present at the announcement. Donovan's decision fills a hole on the GOP ticket, which had no Republican candidate for attorney general.
Current Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, is widely expected to run for governor.
Donovan, who was first elected district attorney in 2003 and is now serving his second term, provides Republicans with a credible candidate, the New York Times reported.
Plus, he's now got the backing of the city's billionaire mayor. Bloomberg is generally reticent about making political endorsements, but this year said he would support candidates who want to lift the cap on charter schools.
On the Richmond County D.A. Website, Donovan is described as "aggressively targeted drunk driving, illegal guns, sex offenders, and domestic violence"
