In a letter sent to all NYC agency heads this morning, Mayor Bloomberg's budget director has asked for detailed plans to cut as much as 1.3 billion dollars from their budgets.
This is how much New York state's budget problems and resulting aid reductions threatens the quality of life in the Big Apple. In recent months, the Mayor has predicted the dire consequences losing the state aid: 8,500 teacher layoffs, closing multiple firehouses as well as other reductions to uniformed agencies.
Now he's asking agencies to put the actual cuts on paper, in order of priority. Submissions are due on April 7th. To reach 1.3 billion in savings, Bloomberg is asking agencies to slash 7.2 percent of their budgets, except for uniformed agencies and schools 3.6% and 2.7%, respectively.
