Brooklyn's growing shopping and dining scene will soon be more accessible to tourists and visiting friends with 40 -- yes 40 -- new hotels planned for the borough in the coming years.
Throughout New York, another 46 new hotels will open in 2010, and 12 of those will be in Brooklyn. Analysts say tourists, fed up with Manhattan prices, are likely to opt for new options.
Smith Travel Research Inc., which collects news and data on the global hotel market, told the Brooklyn Eagle that there are currently 15 hotels under construction, two in the final planning stage and 21 more in planning. Two establishments are in "pre-planning."
Two hotels will open in downtown Brooklyn this year -- a Sheraton and a trendier establishment called Aloft. Both buildings are going up on Duffield Street.
There's a Hyatt under construction at 40 Nevins Street and a Best Western is going up at 55 Flatbush -- close to BAM in Fort Greene.
Over in Gowanus, the Holiday Inn on Union and the pricey Hotel Le Blue on Fourth Avenue won't be alone for long. There are plans for at least seven new hotels in the area, including a Choice Hotel at 611 Degraw between Third and Fourth Aves. and a Fairfield Inn at 181 Third Ave. and Butler Street. There's even a Super 8 planned for Third Ave. and President Street.
Reached last week by the Brooklyn Eagle, borough President Marty Markowitz said "I can't think of a better symbol of Brooklyn's progress than the new hotels."
