3 Teens Arrested in Possible Bias Attacks on Asian Women: Cops

Police arrested three teenagers on charges of assault as a hate crime on Friday, accusing them in five separate attacks on Asian women near Manhattan's Chinatown.

Police withheld the names of two girls, ages 15 and 12, and a boy, 15, because they are juveniles. The arrests came after the police released a video of three possible suspects.

In each case, the woman was attacked in or near a public housing project. None were seriously injured.

A 71-year-old woman was struck at about 6:40 p.m. Saturday outside of the Baruch Houses, a public housing project.

Police do not believe the suspects used racial slurs. The incidents occurred on the edge of Chinatown and in Manhattan's Lower East Side.

Councilwoman Margaret Chin, who represents Chinatown, called the attacks "unacceptable" and encouraged residents who might know something to contact the authorities.

"We know that a lot of seniors are vulnerable; they're afraid to come forward," Chin said.

Police released video of three suspects on Friday. They were seen entering 90 Pitt St. on the Lower East Side, where a 50-year-old woman was attacked at 1:20 a.m. on March 31.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn held a news conference Friday on the attacks.

"This is not acceptable. This is not New York," she said. "It is behavior that will not be tolerated."
