Is it possible Barack Obama's cabinet selection process involves channel surfing?

CNN correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta has been invited to be the next Surgeon General, according to Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post.

Gupta has reportedly expressed interest in the position and is taking a few days to work out the logistics of a move from Atlanta to Washington. Gupta and Obama initially talked about the opening during a meeting in Chicago last November.

The Michigan native has worked for the White House before, having helped then-first lady Hillary Clinton with speeches and policy issues in the late '90s.

A trained neurosurgeon, Gupta performed brain surgery five times while embedded with Marine doctors in Iraq during the initial 2003 invasion.

He currently serves as host of CNN's "House Calls," files reports for CBS' "The Evening News With Katie Couric" and "60 minutes," writes a column for Time magazine and serves as associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital.
