Alcoholic Patient Drinks 6-Pack – of Hand Sanitizer

An Australian man being treated for alcoholism downed six bottles of hand-sanitizer, boosting his blood-alcohol level into the stratosphere.

The alcohol-based antibacterial gel brought the unidentified 45-year-old man's blood alcohol level to a staggering 0.271 percent, more than five times the legal limit for driving Down Under.

"It surprised us that he drank this stuff," Dr. Michael Oldmeadow said, according to the Australian Associated Press. "It's horrendous. You'd think it would taste pretty bad."

The man had been admitted to hospital three days earlier when nurses noticed he had become drowsy. They found the empties near his bed and the man admitted to drinking them to get a buzz.

Now medical experts are calling for the sanitizer to be secured, according to The Associated Press. The sanitizer the man drank is ethanol-based and has an alcohol content of 66 percent, making it 132 proof.
