Impotence, also known as Erectile Dysfunction or ED, is a man’s inability to achieve or sustain an erection for sexual intercourse. As you may have heard, something like this can happen to a lot of guys... occasional difficulty is normal. However, ED is a prolonged inability to stand up to the task over time.

Common causes of ED include high blood pressure, obesity, stress, depression, substance abuse, smoking and aging.

Despite the perceived stigma, it’s important to discuss impotence with your doctor. For many men, simple adjustments such as quitting smoking, losing weight or reducing stress may help. For other men, treatment options include medications such as Viagra, penile implants and vascular surgery. Another reason to talk with your physician is that ED can sometimes be a symptom of a larger issue, such as heart disease or diabetes.
