Buying green? The state has some tips for you.

Gov. David Paterson says New York is providing preliminary guidelines for state agencies to buy "green."

The state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Office of General Services will help agencies, public authorities and public benefit corporations save money while investing in products and services that are better for the environment.

The guidelines will influence various purchases, including computers, copiers, printers, electronic signs and dishwashers.

The new plans approve 18 specifications for buying environmentally friendly products -- including that they use recycled content, avoid toxic chemicals or promote reuse.

State agencies and authorities can't use the specifications until they're final. Three have been approved so far.
