Primary to decide Alexander opponent, House seats

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Two freshman Tennessee congressmen share little when it comes to geography or ideology. But both face tough challenges in the primary election.

Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen, of Memphis, and Republican Rep. David Davis, of Kingsport, are trying to avoid returning home after only two years in Congress.

Other races being decided Thursday include the Democratic Senate nomination to challenge Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander.

Former state Democratic Party Chairman Bob Tuke and former Knox County Clerk Mike Padgett have campaigned most actively for the Democratic Senate nomination - though no Democrat has come close to Alexander's formidable fundraising totals.

There are also several contested nomination fights for seats in the state Legislature, judicial retention votes and some local government elections.
