A day full of festivities commemorating the birth of our great nation had Rep. Peter King reflecting on the country's true heroes and wondering why anybody cares a whit about a dead "lowlife" who may have been "a good singer (and) did some dancing."

Are you planning to go to Los Angeles for Michael Jackson's memorial? Send us a tip and tell us about it. Come back here tomorrow to watch the Jackson memorial live.

"For the last -- I don't know how long now, this lowlife, Michael Jackson, his name, his face, his picture is all over the newspapers, television, radio. It's all we hear about is Michael Jackson. Let's knock out the psychobabble. This guy was a pervert, a child molester, he was a pedophile," said the Republican congressman on Sunday as he stood outside the Wantagh American Legion Hall in Nassau County . "And to be giving this much coverage to him, day in and day out... what does it say about us as a country? I just think it's too -- I just think we're too politically correct. No one wants to stand up and say, 'We don't need Michael Jackson.'"

King on King

The whole screed was caught on video and disseminated across the Internet by the fine folks from TMZ.

While it's clear that King has no use for the King of Pop, 1.6 million people have registered for tickets to his memorial at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Anyone hoping to get in had better be ready to cough up as much as $20,000.

If this is part of King's strategy to position himself for a run at Kirsten Gillibrand's Senate seat in 2010, he may want to reconsider so viciously and publicly attacking a man who was second only to Elvis in the history of popular music.
