A Suffolk County police officer was killed Saturday morning in an early-morning crash on Long Island, police said.

Detective Sgt. Robert Reecks was driving eastbound on the Sunrise Highway in Moriches when his vehicle veered off the roadway and hit a concrete bridge structure, according to a statement by police.

Reecks, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been a deputy of the Suffolk county Police Department since 1981, and was a deputy in the Hate Crimes Unit until he resigned in January.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752
