Women in New York City are more likely to walk to work than in any other metro-area in the country. The practice means lower levels of obesity.

New York women are some of the healthiest in the country, a new survey by Self Magazine reveals.

Self looked at 100 of the largest U.S. metro areas to reveal the fittest, healthiest and happiest ladies in the land.

New York City, White Plains, and Wayne N.J., ranked as seventh in 2008.  That's up one spot from 2007.

According to the survey, New York-area women are more likely to walk to work than in any other place.  The exercise contributes to reduced levels of obesity and obesity-related illness.

New York women are also far less likely to die in a car accident, as the city has one of the five lowest rates of vehicular death.

There are also 43-precent more ob/gyns and internists than the national average.

But, on the downside, New York women also have fewer health clubs and gyms per capita than the country's average.

New York women also have higher-than-average deaths from heart disease, breast cancer and cervical cancer.  The busy pace of life in New York means many residents have a lower level of emotional and social support.

The Self Magazine survey analyzed roughly 8,000 bits of data in more than 50 categories, including death and disease rates, environmental indicators, community resources and lifestyle habits.
