<![CDATA[Fashion Week Recap: Day 8]]> Fri, 15 Feb 2013 18:46:58 -0400 http://media.nbcnewyork.com/images/213*120/Marc+Jacobs+fall+2013.jpg

After a blizzard, show delays, and lord knows how many Reed Krakoff for Laduree macarons, New York Fashion Week has officially come to a close.

Day 8 ended the festivities on a high-note with a color-changing collection from Marc Jacobs, two Russian-inspired collections by Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, and a few sage words of wisdom from one of our favorite front row fixtures, Lynn Yaeger.

Yesterday, we learned that Anna Dello Russo had been delayed due to the blizzard, but that didn't stop Man Repeller Leandra Medine from some hilarious speculation about the street style star's whereabouts. [The Man Repeller]

After late deliveries forced him to postpone his show from Monday to Thursday night, Marc Jacobs pulled off one of the most intriguing shows of Fashion Week. First, the designer sent models onto the runway bathed in a harsh yellow light that desaturated the looks and relegated show goers and his color palette to half-tone. On the second loop, the lights went up, revealing the garments in full, glorious color. [Style.com]

Enigmatic fashion writer Lynn Yaeger shared sage Fashion Week wisdom with Stylecaster: "It’s not important where your seat is, it’s not important that you didn’t get invited to the dinner. It’s not important! Try to keep it in perspective, because otherwise you’ll be like me in my very first season years ago where I cried every day.” [Stylecaster]

Wondering why Erin Fetherston chose not to show this season? Because she's been busy planning a "fairy tale" wedding, of course. [Fashionologie]

Calvin Klein proposed shoulder-y coats with cinched-in waists inspired by "Ivan's Childhood," a 1962 Soviet film about an orphan in World War II. [Style.com]

Ralph Lauren also looked to Russia for inspiration for fall '13, topping off elaborate beaded evening gowns with lush mink stoles and fur cossack hats. [Style.com]

There was plenty to feast your eyes on during the seventh day of New York Fashion Week. For more refined tastes, soft, couture-inspired looks at Proenza Schouler felt grown-up and sophisticated, while Jeremy Scott's show—which Perez Hilton attended shirtless—offered celeb sightings aplenty.

Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez abandoned the splashy prints and patterns of last season (which were inspired by "surfing the internet") in favor of soft colors and couture-inspired silhuettes. [Style.com]

Over-the-knee boots continue to trend for fall '13, as evidenced by the shiny crocodile stompers (with bright white soles) that went down Reed Krakoff's runway yesterday. [Style.com]

The Daily feted its tenth year in print with a splashy soiree hosted by two drag queens doing spot-on Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington impressions. [Fashionista]

We were wondering why we hadn't seen Anna Dello Russo—or, more specifically, her outrageous couture ensembles—at the tents this season. According to Styleite, her late arrival to NYFW was the result of last week's blizzard Nemo. [Styleite]

John Galliano—who has been working with Oscar de la Renta for the past month—left his mark on the American designer's fall collection with little peplum jackets and dresses with cinched waists that evoked looks from his tenure at Dior. [Styleite]

Jeremy Scott takes the prize for most naked front row of Fashion Week: Perez Hilton enjoyed the presentation in a plaid skirt (and nothing else). [The Cut]

Also in unusual front-row news, "Boardwalk Empire" star Steve Buscemi made a somewhat puzzling appearance at Nanette Lepore. [The Cut]

What do Gustav Klimt, Marrakech, and Santa Cruz (circa 1983) have in common? All inspired collections showing on Day 6 of New York Fashion Week, from Klimt-inspired brocades at Tory Burch to Rodarte's luxe take on '80s DIY glam.

The Mulleavy sisters mined their 1980's Santa Cruz childhoods for inspiration for fall 2013, which yielded knockouts like fringed and bedazzled sweaters (made to look deliberately "DIY") and silky tie-dye evening gowns. [Style.com]

Retail powerhouse, J.Crew, showed a collection of luxe preppy staples with a Moroccan twist. After a trip to Marrakech, designer Tom Mora experimented with tile printed coats, sequinned arabesques and thick knits inspired by Moroccoan rugs. [Style.com]

Marie Claire accessories editor, Kyle Anderson, was the first to sport Chanel's outrageous "hoola hoop bag" to Fashion Week. [Fashionista]

The paintings of Gustav Klimt—which became Tory Burch's favorite feature of the Neue Gallerie—inspired a luxe, metallic-accented collection for fall 2013, which the designer showed in her own apartment building. [WWD]

Vera Wang may be one of the reigning queens when it comes to dramatic evening gowns, but the designer chose to close her fall '13 collection with not one, but two punchy printed pantsuits. [The Cut]

With just two days (okay, three including the Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren shows on Thursday) remaining, beleaguered Fashion Week attendees were energized by 3.1 Phillip Lim's "biker" inspired collection, a spectacularly luxe presentation by The Row (staged in an Upper East Side townhouse), and—perhaps best of all—news of Karlie Kloss' healthy "Perfect 10" cookies for Momofuku Milk Bar.

Zac Posen showed grown up dresses with brocade flourishes inside the shimmery grand ballroom at the Plaza Hotel. [Fashionista]

The fashion industry loves a chic new treat—as evidenced by Reed Krakoff's jet black macarons for Laduree. Tomorrow, Momofuku baker Christina Tosi is teaming up with supermodel Karlie Kloss to pass out free gluten-free "Perfect 10 Kookies." [Fashionista]

The Olsen twins staged their most elabroate presentation ever for their shared label, The Row, by renting an empty Upper East Side townhouse and filling it with art objects and furniture. [Style.com]

For Fall 2013, fashion darling Wes Gordon found inspiration in a Sargeant Pepper-themed "harem," complete with punchy printed gowns and goat hair accents. [Style.com]

At an exclusive preview for its forthcoming "Punk: Chaos to Couture" exhibit, the Costume Institute showed edgy looks by rock n' roll royalty Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Rodarte with a classic '70s punk soundtrack playing on loop. [Stylecaster]

Phillip Lim took inspiration from "biker girlfriends" with a collection that emphasized tough outerwear, knee-high leather boots and itty bitty mini skirts. [Style.com]

Despite news of a looming blizzard (which will surely affect a few editors' pre-planned ensembles), Day 2 of New York Fashion Week went off without a hitch—with the obvious exception of Marc Jacobs' rescheduled runway show, which was postponed to next Thursday after customs delays held up shoe and fabric shipments.

Despite opting out of the Lincoln Center scene, Katie Holmes and stylist Jeanne Yang took private appointments at the Palace Hotel, where they unveiled grown-up fall 2013 looks inspired, in part, by the 1940's. [Style.com]

Kenneth Cole returned to the runway after a seven year hiatus with a collection titled "Urban Liberation" which included sharp wool coats, leather trousers and metallic embellishments. A slew of front-row celebs—Brooke Shields, Heidi Klum, Cuba Gooding Jr.—witnessed one of Cole's trademark humorous video vignettes which noted that the last time he’d shown at Fashion Week there was no such thing as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram—or bloggers, curators and “influencers.” Cole turned the virtual conversation to the common good by pledging $1 to amfAR for every tweet or retweet using #KCRUNWAY from attendees and livestream viewers. [Fashionista]

Richard Chai's military-inspired collection featured a few playful pops, like shiny metallic parkas and lavender-accented graphic dresses. [Style.com]

BCBG may be known for its reasonable price points, but the brand took a decidedly luxe approach to fall 2013, showcasing sweeping floor-length furs, gem-encrusted shells and sheer sequined panels. [Fashionista]

Once again, Marc Jacobs is changing show times. While his runway show was previously scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m., the designer was forced to postpone to the far less desirable Thursday at 8 p.m. time slot due to customs delays. According to Robert Duffy, the label is still missing "bags, shoes, and two fabrics." [Fashionista]

Scott Sternberg showed his latest menswear collection for Band of Outsiders by sending too hunky male models on a scavenger hunt through the city, and livestreaming their shenanigans. If you were lucky, you spotted one of the fellas singing the national anthem in the lobby of the Ace Hotel. [Now Fashion]

The unofficial first day of New York Fashion Week (scheduled shows at the Lincoln Center tents began Thursday morning) was a suitably splashy kick-off to the marathon of runway shows, presentations and parties.

- Celebrities including Alexa Chung, Sarah Jessica Parker and Lindsay Lohan headed to Cipriani Wall Street for Wednesday night's annual amfAR gala. The super-glam soiree honors individuals who've made significant contributions or raised awareness for AIDS research. Our favorite red carpet look: Alexa Chung clad in a polka-dot Chanel mini. [Stylecaster]

- A year ago, J.Brand--creators of butt-flattering denim--unveiled its collection of cool, urban-chic ready-to-wear. This season the brand is putting even more emphasis on its expanded collection, which wil include satin-trimmed bomber jackets and boiled wool and leather track pants for fall 2013. [Style.com]

- Rachel Comey's fall 2013 collection centered around a mysterious Kojak-era heroine, complete with black wigs and bug-eye sunglasses. For a "spy-who-loved-me" take on classic floral prints, Comey's frequent collaborator, Gus Powell, reworked the flowery motif to look like it had "exploded." [Style.com]

- Timo Weiland hints to Fashionista that his Fall '13 collection will feature "confetti camo"—try to figure that one out. [Fashionista.com]

- After complaints that menswear shows tend to be de-emphasized during fashion week, the CFDA is considering adding a men's-only week as soon as this summer, or in early 2014. [WWD]

- Just in time for the Costume Institute's upcoming "Punk" exhibit, John Patrick showed a collection of cool-girl separates and dresses inspired by scene-y East Village fixtures from the '70s and '80s such as Patti Astor and Anya Phillips. [WWD]

<![CDATA[New York Fashion Week: Who's In, Who's Out]]> Wed, 06 Feb 2013 16:20:27 -0400 http://media.nbcnewyork.com/images/213*120/editorstrends_anna_thumbnail.jpg

You may have noticed the startling number of waify pretty young things on the sidewalks and subways this week. With tomorrow's kick-off of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (some designers, including Rachel Comey, will begin showing off-site this afternoon), editors, models, buyers and photographers are already out in droves for the fall 2013 shows.

The tents have always been exclusive, accessible only to a small number of insider invitees. This season, however, New York Fashion Week seems to be taking a more inclusive approach: on Monday, IMG announced its partnership with video platform Righster, which will allow the company to livestream almost 90 shows, including Rebecca Minkoff, Michael Kors, Vera Wang and Diane von Furstenberg.

As for the show schedule, this season's line up has a few notable holes, including New York designer Peter Som, who—in lieu of a runway show—will present his fall 2013 collection digitally at 9am on digitalfashionshows.com. For the designer, the digital realm provides "an opportunity to try out a new platform that can reach a lot of people," Som told WWD. "The show will tap right into the digital and online presence of my brand and it will allow me to try something new creatively.”

Intriguingly, after her much-buzzed-about (and highly exclusive) spring 2013 presentation, Katie Holmes has declined to show her fall 2013 collection for Holmes & Yang, which she co-designs with longtime stylist, Jeanne Yang.

And after rumors that Betsey Johnson had also canceled, the eccentric designer's PR confirmed to NY magazine the brand would stage a catwalk show after all, explaining that "you can always expect the unexpected from Betsey Johnson"

Near cancellations and no-shows aside, the real Fashion Week buzz is what's generated by those who are showing: after a major cash investment from John Howard, the Proenza Schouler boys are said to be taking their small, independent label to the next level. And given that his ballgowns have made it onto Michelle Obama for not one, but two Inaugural Balls, we're curious to see whether Jason Wu makes eveningwear a real emphasis for fall 2013.

Of course, it wouldn't feel like Fashion Week without a smattering of splashy after parties, and this season is no exception. Kate Spade's 26th anniversary bash on February 8th is perhaps the most sought-after invite, with Target's glamorous fete for Prabal Gurung's GO International collection—which takes place Wednesday Feb. 6—a close second.

Today, California label Wildfox—best known for its snarky t-shirts and graphic knits—will blur the line between party and presentation with a show at the lavish Capitale event space. Given that the brand's spring '13 lookbook was an homage to "Clueless," fans are keen to see whether or not a '90s theme will factor into the fete.

Speaking of teen queens, pint-sized pop star Miley Cyrus will perform at Cosmopolitan's latest cover party, co-hosted by perpetually cool Swedish brand, Acne, on February 13, while fellow It-kids Hannah Bronfman and Nick Cohen will DJ Rebecca Minkoff's buzzy soiree at the Grammercy Terrace on Friday.
