“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” Starring Scarlett Johansson, Begins Previews

The latest revival of Tennessee Williams’ “Cat On a Hot Tin Roof,” starring Scarlett Johansson, begins previews this week at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Johansson, who nabbed a Tony Award for her Broadway debut in 2010’s “A View From the Bridge,” stars as sex-starved Maggie “the Cat,” with Benjamin Walker (“Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”) as husband Brick. Irish actor Ciaran Hinds (“Game of Thrones”) and Debra Monk (“Curtains”) are Big Daddy and Big Mama.

Set in the Mississippi Delta, Williams’ Pulitzer-winning drama unfolds as “Big Daddy” Pollitt is about to celebrate his 65th birthday. Big Daddy is distressed by the relationship between Maggie and Brick, an aging football hero who has taken up drinking since the suicide of his close friend, Skipper.

This is “Cat’s” third life on Broadway within just the last decade. The play was last revived in 2008 with an all-African-American cast led by Terrence Howard and Anika Noni Rose. Ashley Judd and Jason Patric starred in a 2003 revival.

Tony Award winner Rob Ashford (“Evita”) directs. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or by calling 877-250-2929, and in person at the Richard Rodgers Theatre box office. “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” officially opens Jan. 17. A video preview of the production is below.
