‘Hamilton' Picks Replacements for Leading Roles After Miranda, Soo, Leslie Odom, Jr. Departures

They're going to be in the room where it happens.

Brandon Victor Dixon, Lexi Lawson and Michael Luwoye have joined the cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning, history-making musical "Hamilton."

Dixon, Tony-nominated this season for "Shuffle Along," will take over the role of Alexander Hamilton's rival Aaron Burr. Leslie Odom, Jr., who won a Tony for originating the role, will depart the production on July 9. Dixon will join the cast in mid-August, after the closing of "Shuffle Along."

Lawson will step into the role of Eliza Schuyler on July 11, taking over for the Tony-nominated Phillipa Soo, who will also play her final performance on July 9. Lawson previously worked with Miranda, starring in the first national tour of his first musical "In the Heights."

Up next for Soo is the title role in the musical adaptation of the 2001 romantic comedy "Amélie' -- opening on Broadway this spring.

Odom, Jr. and Soo aren't the only ones departing "Hamilton" on July 9. Miranda previously announced he is exiting the production on that date, replaced by his longtime alternate Javier Muñoz.

Muñoz's alternate will be Michael Luwoye, a Lucille Lortel award winner for his role in "Invisible Thread." "Hamilton" will be Luwoye's Broadway debut. As was the case with Miranda and Munoz previously, Luwoye will step into the role once weekly.

"Hamilton," with book, music and lyrics by Miranda, tells the story of America's founding father Alexander Hamilton. The hip-hop musical is directed by Tony winner Thomas Kail, and is currently playing an open run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
