“Fiddler” Readies Fifth Revival

While you were lining up at the stage door of “All the Way,” trying to get Bryan Cranston to sign your “Breaking Bad” swag, here’s what was happening In the Wings.

“Fiddler on the Roof” will have its fifth Broadway revival in the fall of 2015. Bartlett Sheer (“South Pacific”) will direct, and Danny Burstein (“Golden Boy”) is rumored to take the lead role of Tevye. The most recent revival of “Fiddler” was in 2004, with Alfred Molina (and eventually, Harvey Fierstein) as Tevye. You could say revivals of “Fiddler on the Roof” are becoming a bit of a “Tradition” on Broadway, huh? GET IT?!? [More info]

Speaking of revivals, the Roundabout Theater company will revive “Into the Woods” during their 2014-15 season. The production comes from the McCarter Theatre Center and Fiasco Theater’s acclaimed restaging, which presents Stephen Sondheim and Jame Lapine’s Tony-winning musical with only 10 actors and one piano. Performances begin the winter of 2015 at Off-Broadway’s Lara Pels Theatre. A film version of “Into the Woods,” directed by Rob Marshall and starring, amongst others, Meryl Streep as The Witch and Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, will hit theaters this December. [More info]

Your dog could be a Broadway star. Producers of the new Broadway show “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill” may have secured Audra McDonald to play legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday, but there’s one part that’s proven to be a bitch to cast: a small dog. So they’re hosting a “Doggie Talent Search” to find the little K-9 star. Interested owners should send a clear photo along with description and temperament to LadyDayDogAuditions@gmail.com. Ideal canine-dates are 15lbs or less, people-friendly, and don’t mind being held. Submissions are due by 10AM on March 10. If you do well, callbacks will be held the next day. “Lady Day” will play a 10 week engagement on Broadway, so that’s only 70 performances of doggie fame ahead of you. You can do it! [More info]

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s long awaited ‘Hamilton Mixtape” project will have its world premiere in January 2015 at The Public Theater. Now called “Hamilton,” the show features Miranda playing Alexander Hamilton – one of our country’s Founding Fathers and the first Secretary of the Treasury. Of course, don’t go in expecting “Hamilton” to sound like any other historical musical you’ve heard yet. Miranda brings his unique hip-hop style to the story, previewed below in a performance of a song at the White House in 2009. [More info]
