A Wisconsin father has an important message for his daughter’s boyfriend—and he used their homecoming dance photos as an opportunity to share, and enforce, it.
Sharee Schock, a professional photographer in West Salem, Wisconsin, was photographing her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend before their homecoming dance on Oct. 10 when her husband Ben Schock told the boyfriend, “Whatever you do to my daughter I will do to you.”
The group of family and friends that had gathered to take pictures that day laughed at the joke as the young couple continued to pose.
“Right after I got the shot, my husband walked right over and put his arms around the boyfriend’s waist and looked right at me,” Sharee Schock said. “Her boyfriend thought it was hilarious and he smiled and I just quickly captured it.”
Sharee Schock didn’t think much about the photo until her daughter Ricarra, a sophomore at West Salem High School, asked about it after the dance. That’s when Sharee Schock edited the images to be side-by-side and added her husband’s quote to the top.
Her daughter’s boyfriend then posted the photo on Instagram and Sharee Schock shared it on her Facebook page.
“It just immediately was shared by all of our friends and family,” Sharee Schock said. “My husband and I’s phone would just not stop. Every few seconds it was going up in numbers. I would say it went viral in a few days.”
The image was shared more than 2,000 times from Schock’s personal page and had more than 36,000 likes as of Monday. It was also posted to imgur, where it received more than 3.3 million views.
“It’s crazy because we’re just this little town,” Sharee Schock said. “It’s gone crazy over this silly little picture that honestly I didn’t even think we’d ever see again. It wasn’t really an intentional thing.”
The Schock family said the strangest part of the image’s success is the irony of it – Ben Schock isn’t actually an overprotective parent.
“He’s just a big, giant teddy bear that is not really in any way overprotective,” Sharee Schock said. “I’m kind of the one that’s the stern one.”
