Baby Giraffe Quiets in April's Belly: Calm Before the Storm?

As April the giraffe's belly grows ever larger, her highly anticipated calf has gotten quiet, leading zookeepers to wonder if this is the calm before the storm. The giraffe calf caused a stir Friday when it launched a "judo chop marathon" inside its mother's belly but it calmed down significantly on Saturday. April's keeper noted Sunday morning that she's showing "notable bulges" on the left side of her belly, the zoo reported on its Facebook page. Watch the live stream below. [[414784803, C]] April has been taking it slow Sunday, alternating between waddling around her pen and standing still, staring into Oliver's pen. The snow has cleared so April and her beau Oliver may go outside soon, the zoo said. The zoo said that April's belly growth has been mind-blowing. She has to fit a 6-foot, 150-pound calf somewhere, it said. Eventually, it has to come out, right? [[26343834, C]] When April goes into labor, t

The other boy's injuries are not considered life-threatening, police say. No arrest has been made.

Gunfire erupted inside a crowded nightclub early Sunday, killing one person and wounding more than a dozen others. There was no indication the shooting at the Cameo club was terrorism related, police said. Assistant Police Chief Paul Neudigate said in a tweet that the motive was still unclear. Authorities also didn't immediately have any suspects in the 1:30 a.m. shooting on a busy weekend night. Neudigate tweeted that there was only one reported shooter but that police were investigating whether others were involved. Police had earlier said "at least a couple of shooters" were involved.

A Long Island man has been arrested in a deadly hit-and-run, police say. The victim, 41-year-old Jose Salinas, was walking in the middle of the road on Washington Avenue in Brentwood Friday night when an SUV hit him and fled, police say. Salinas was left lying on the road when a pickup truck hit him, according to police. The driver of that pickup stayed on the scene and called police. Salinas was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV that first hit Salinas, 54-year-old Cesar Velasquez, was arrested Saturday on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Now What? Options for Consumers as Health Law Drama Fades

As the political drama over health care legislation in Washington fades, the rest of the country faces a more immediate concern: Getting insurance for next year. The Republican health plan designed to replace the Obama-era health law known as the Affordable Care Act would not have taken full effect for a few years anyway — and now it's dead. "We're going to be living with Obamacare for the foreseeable future," House Speaker Paul Ryan said Friday. That means millions of Americans will have to navigate a current federal health care system that, while not "imploding" as President Donald J. Trump has said, is at least in flux.

Homeless Man Arrested in Lower East Side Rape Attempt: NYPD

A man with a long rap sheet has been arrested in a rape attempt on the Lower East Side earlier this month, police say. Robert Adames, 41, is the man police say followed a woman into her apartment building in the area of Norfolk and Rivington streets, shoved through her door and groped her on March 3. He then tried to take off her clothing but the woman resisted, and the man ran away, police said. Adames has been arrested on attempted rape, sex-motivated burglary, forcible touching, sex abuse and criminal trespass charges in the case. Attorney information for the man wasn't immediately clear. Police sources say Adames, who is homeless, has been arrested 40 times since 1998, mostly for robbery and drug possession. He is on parole until 2020 after serving two years in prison for a 2012 perjury conviction, sources said. Police
